My Journey So Far
From a young age, animals have been my greatest passion. Whether it was rescuing stray creatures, spending hours with horses, or simply observing the natural world, that love for animals has guided my choices, shaped my experiences, and inspired my dreams for the future.
A Love for Animals and Hands-On Care
My connection to animals started early, but it truly deepened when I began volunteering at Serenity Lane Animal Sanctuary. Mucking stalls, feeding farm animals, and ensuring their well-being taught me the importance of patience, responsibility, and attentive care. It was there that I learned animal care isn’t just a task—it’s a commitment to their health and happiness.
At Endless Journey Stable, my love for horses grew even stronger. Beyond riding, I spent countless hours helping with stable duties—mucking stalls, grooming horses, and cleaning their hooves. These tasks weren’t just chores; they were opportunities to connect with the animals, understand their needs, and contribute to their care. The bond I formed with the horses reinforced my desire to work with animals in a professional capacity.
My co-op placement as a Veterinary Assistant at Champlain Animal Hospital gave me a real-world look at veterinary medicine. Cleaning kennels, assisting with wellness checks, and preparing medical equipment showed me the dedication and teamwork required in a clinic. Unpacking heavy supplies and maintaining a clean environment also taught me the physical stamina and attention to detail that are essential in this field.
Exploring Vet School
To further explore my passion, I attended the Discover Vet School short program at the University of Guelph. This experience opened my eyes to the diverse opportunities in veterinary medicine and confirmed my desire to pursue this path. It was inspiring to see the blend of science, compassion, and hands-on care that defines the profession.
Advocating for Animals in My Community
Beyond the clinic and stables, I’ve always wanted to make a difference for animals closer to home. As a Cat Adoption Day Attendant and Fosterer with the Kawartha Lakes Animal Wellness Society, I helped cats find loving homes and cared for fosters in my own space. Watching a shy cat slowly gain confidence and trust was incredibly rewarding—it reminded me of the impact that patience and care can have on an animal’s life.
Balancing Arts and Sciences
My high school years at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School were a unique blend of creativity and academics. As a student in the Integrated Arts Dance Program, I spent years in the studio, learning discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Dancing taught me how to balance passion with responsibility, perform under pressure, and strive for excellence—lessons that have shaped who I am today.
But my love for science and animals never took a backseat. Being on the Honour Roll every year from Grade 9 to 12 reflected my dedication to my studies, even as I balanced the demands of an arts-focused program. I’ve always believed that creativity and logic aren’t opposites—they complement each other, and that balance has been a defining part of my journey.
Bilingual and Always Learning
I’ve been in French Immersion since Senior Kindergarten, and achieving a B1 level in French has been a point of pride for me. Being bilingual has opened doors—whether it was communicating with voters as an Election Information Officer or simply connecting with people in my community. It’s also given me a deeper appreciation for language, culture, and the power of clear communication, which I know will be invaluable in my future career.
Why Veterinary Medicine?
All of these experiences—caring for animals, balancing arts and sciences, learning new languages, and pushing myself to grow—have led me to one clear goal: becoming a veterinarian. I want to spend my life healing animals, supporting their families, and contributing to the field of animal health. Vet school is the next step on that journey, and I’m ready to bring my passion, my work ethic, and my love for animals to this challenging and rewarding path.
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m focused on gaining as much experience as I can, continuing to learn, and preparing for the next chapter of my education. I’m excited for what the future holds and grateful for every experience that has brought me to this point.
If you’d like to connect, share opportunities, or just chat about animals, I’d love to hear from you!
